Additions to & excerpts from my personal Rotary “vocational” remarks in August 2022 to “my” Rotary Club of Fredericksburg (TX) Morning

Welcome to my “stream-of-consciousness” version of my autobiography!

“Fun, Friends, Fulfillment — elected, selected, honored, cheered on, awarded, rewarded, recognized, praised, chosen, advanced:” my job-hopping history … my vocations / “callings” & accompanying adventures In about 2020 — much to my own surprise, when I remarked to a former Ingalls School District student Sharon Oringderff, “You know after it’s all said & done, I really loved you kids.” To which she automatically responded, “Oh, we knew that!”

Beginning in Aug. 2022: my 100x daily affirmations (= each affirmation daily for every day of my life, beginning 6-30-’46): Thank You. Eternal Divine Christ Light Consciousness: eternally transforming all — for Life’s Highest Destiny blessings. All for the sole eternal glory of Eternal Divine Christ-Light Consciousness / Eternal Compounding Grace. I love you, I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you. Every day in every way, God is making me better, better & best. I am celebrating Life. I am inspiring Joy. Eternal, compounding Divine Light Consciousness: fully realized as all, by all, One: magnificent!

Contemplating my magical life, sometimes I think that all I have to do is to admit that not only are “These the Good Old Days,” but perhaps this really is heaven on earth & my only role is to proclaim it — as I did publicly at the paradigm-changing, tremendously successful conclusion of the 3-day, intensive Money&U interactive workshop in Austin, TX, May 1993. … so I’m hereby proclaiming Heaven on Earth now! & sharing some of my serendipitous adventures, below.

Quick, off-the-top-of-my-head summary of completely unexpected, serendipitous leadership roles, jobs, volunteer adventures:

a Top, multi-year seller of Camp Fire Girl boxes of Russell Stover chocolates — only $1 per box. My selling success earned my name on The Tree Bark Scroll at Camp Ko-Ha-Me in Kansas; grade-school years: Blue Bird & eventual member of TaKiMakoda / circle of friends Camp Fire Girl group with Karen Morse, Donna Mitchell, Susan Young, Barbie Brasfield, Tammy Jarman & others. I chose “TaWaCa” / Happy Flower for my Camp Fire Girl name. M 55-year-older father patiently helped me earn beads through required duties in the Camp Fire Girl manual. I donated my Camp Fire Girl vest with all the beads I’d earned, my Camp Fire Girl manual with all of the bead-earning activities I’d completed & lifelong favorite books, yearbooks, photos, hand-written notebooks & a binder filled with my hand-written, year-by-year memories to the Texas Tech University Archives at T Tech Univ. in Lubbock, TX — where I worked for six-or-so years until my retirement circa 2012.

Twice-elected class president of my 5th-grade class at Alice Birney Elementary School in San Diego, CA. Led the Mr. Graves’ fifth-grade girls’ athletics team “The Mad Hatters” to a winning season & won a free trip to Disney Land (from San Diego to Anaheim on the church bus — with my mother & step-father Russell Gabbert as adult sponsors) for having taken so many classmates to my Missionary Alliance Church Sunday School classes.

Leader in Roosevelt Intermediate girls’ gym class: group, syncopated marching: my favorite “sport. Elected Student Council representative from my Roosevelt Homeroom 204 but never got to serve — given my second move to San Diego, CA. Appointed as a 9th-grade hall monitor but never served even when I moved back from San Diego, CA. Selected as Queen Nominee for homeroom 204. Susie Wolf won as all-school 9th-grade queen.

winner of dance contests at Co-Ed: Friday-night sock hops at St. James Episcopal Church: 1958-1960elected one-year secretary of Co-Ed (nominated by boy friend John Lambert; my Co-Ed speech contest manager, Jamie Howell).

Danced on CBS-TV’s Hi-Fi Hop with John Lambert: that particular show was chosen for airing on the 25th anniversary of Hi-Fi Hop. My now-late, former husband Dodge City, KS, dentist Chris Breitenbach was watching the show with me in Dodge City, KS, & remarked, “There you are dancing!” All I could see was John Lambert, my 3-time-wearing-his-ring boy friend. He was a very attentive, kind & thoughtful boyfriend. I lost him as a boyfriend when I moved the second time to San Diego, CA (after 8th grade & just before the beginning of 9th grade) — by my return to Wichita during 2nd semester of 9th grade, John had irretrievably moved on to girl friend Duane Jinnett — even though we had exchanged a few letters when I was attending Woodrow Wilson Jr. High in San Diego..

a personal highlights:

* sole, 3-yr. Senator at Wichita High School East, 1961-64 (1 of 4 in 1961-62; 1 of 6; in 1962-63; 1 of 8 in 1963-64, respectively)

* invited to join prestigious Chi Omega sorority at The University of Kansas, January 1965 — thanks mainly to the Panhellenic mothers of the Kabongas / East High boys’ intramural circle of friends: mothers of Bob Bury, Jim Helmick, Bob Fulks, Mark Anderson & others

Places I’ve volunteered / worked: Institute of Logopedics in Wichita, KS; Kansas City, MO, Public Schools: Van Horn High School, Swinney Elementary School, Kumpf Elementary School; ?Van Horn? Jr. High; Ingalls Independent School District: high school, jr. high & grade school; Dodge City Community College: Intro to English Composition x2; class for adults (from Arrowhead West Inc. non-profit organization for southwest Kansans with intellectual challenges; KETCH: KS Elks Training Center for the Handicapped; DCCC Center for Business & Industry; Community Relations & Resource Development; after a 9-mo. stint with Leadership Kansas, I helped other Dodge Citians form Leadership Dodge: a Chamber of Commerce-sponsored, annual program to systematically, annually recruit a class of 12 local leaders to learn more about business, industry, non-profit & educational activities within Dodge City; Dodge City Women’s Chamber of Commerce: Outstanding Woman for one quarter; UT Austin: Writing for Mass Communication x2 (one group of students & I went to the UT Student Union to have a group photo taken with Santa Claus: fun! I received a top-most, informal rating from UT College of Communication students; Copy Editing, Writing for Public Relations; Fund-Development officer for the College of Communication (within approx. 2 mos. tuned a money-losing Phon-a-thon enterprise into a $20K annual revenue-builder; 9-yr. career at the TX Dept. of Health, thanks to Leadership Austin classmate Ms. D. Lynn Denton: Shots Across Texas, infant immunization / social-marketing campaign that raised $5+M dollars, recruited thousands of volunteers (TX A&M Univ. System AgriLife Extension wonder-workers, national insurance company, Gay Gaddis & Sherry Matthews’ Advertising Agencies, Dairy Queen, Blue Bell Ice Cream, Kiwanis & thousands more; TX Volunteer Health Corps: highest-performance, excellent team I’ve even been privileged to work with (with 2 federally funded Volunteers In Service To America / VISTA programs; Volunteer Mailroom with people with disabilities as volunteers: on site & at their respective agencies’ sites ; TX Alliance for Healthy Communities; TX Higher Education Coordinating Board: College for ALL Texans Campaign: trainer for hundreds of public school superintendents, principals, teachers & program directors for 12 of 24 of TX Education Agency’s Education Service Centers: geographical, high-performance administrative sites to provide educational & technical support for all teachers, administrators, computer-support & other key personnel ,,, were my assigned training areas: dozens of fun, interactive trainings for professional educators, administrators, parents, volunteer community leaders & ESC personnel throughout TX for 2 years: e-lists with approx. 10,000 talented individuals; I counted 100+ local GO Centers (go to college) throughout my geographically assigned areas of TX: magnificent educators, parents, administrators who deeply cared about children’s futures; TX Tech Univ. System: Public Relations Director in Lubbock / northwest, TX during a public-relations e-storm about changing of TTU System logo: use of cotton boles (true issue was that we had egregiously hired an Austin ad agency v. a local ad agency to manage the change of the visual identity system); fortunately I somehow managed to remain working in Lubbock: from the TTU System to TX Tech Univ.: Office of Undergraduate Admissions & later the winding-down Institute for the Study of Arid & Semi-Arid lands — where I eventually retired. ICASALS ceased to exist shortly thereafter. ICASALS had an outstanding administrative assistant who wrote effective grants, mentored incoming students & visiting faculty from Brazil. When she moved away, my interest faded. During my simultaneous years on the board of Lubbock-based Breedlove, food bank for the world, I travelled to Honduras where I saw long-time volunteer missionaries (& their children, following in their medical-volunteer footsteps) working with local people. Very inspiring! I had first become aware of Breedlove & its world-wide food program when I was part of the 100-women, year-long Leadership Texas organization, former TX Gov. Ann Richards’ version of Texas’ good-old-girls’ network of accomplished women in all areas of local, county, state, national & international work, volunteerism & political activities.

My years in Lubbock were idyllic: I joined The Rotary Club of Lubbock (the “good old boys” who had gone all through public school & TX Tech together; they repeatedly elected me to their board of directors whenever I was eligible to be on the ballot & eventually elected me Pres. of The Rotary Club of Lubbock Foundation, worth approximately $i600K — from which we used earnings to support school- & community projects. In the meantime, I’d been recruited to become Rotary District Foundation Chair & in the learning & training process became so favorably impressed with The Rotary [International] Foundation that I became an Arch Klumph Society member at the $250K-level & got invited to Evanston, IL, to give my 4-min. acceptance speech & to see my favorite photo display on the glass Wall of Donors at RI headquarters. Almost immediately, I moved from Lubbock to Fredericksburg in Jan. 2014 & joined the Rotary Club of Fredericksburg Morning where I served as president.; Rotary District & Rotary Zone Membership Chair.

On my first Monday of retirement(circa 2010), a volunteer from the Humane Society of West Texas called me & asked me to foster six new-born kittens, who had been born at the South Plains Food Bank farm. — & thus began an additional phase of my cat-loving life … all a surprise to me because I had been a dyed-in-the-wool dog parent & had naturally thought of myself as a “dog person.” Any way, because the South Plains Food Bank was on of the projects of “my” Rotary Club of Lubbock, I agreed. And thus began decades’-long fostering, transporting, trapping-spaying-neutering (mostly on the TTU campus) of cats. — & establishing dozens of dog-&-cat friendly endowments at various community foundations in Lubbock, Dodge City, Wichita, Austin, Fredericksburg.

Highlights of TX Tech experiences: founding member, eventual president of Phi Beta Kappa Alumni Assoc. of W. TX & E. New Mexico & multiple-endowments founder of the Phi Beta Kappa Chapter of TTU; board member & endowments-founder for near-by South Plains College in Levelland, TX: where I was named an Annual Pace Setter by their fund-development board; I served several years on the fast-paced SPC Development Board; named Hispana of the Year by Sigma Delta Pi & its sponsor Dr. Comfort Pratt; top award from the Lubbock Hispanic Assoc. of Women; Humanitarian of the Year award in about 2013 (a year or two after I’d moved from Lubbock to Fredericksburg), the Lubbock Volunteer Center named me Humanitarian of the Year — as did the Humane Society of West Texas. At the Volunteer Center’s prestigious luncheon, several tables of friends from my Rotary Club of Lubbock showed up to cheer on my Humanitarian remarks. Also, I was invited to join Lubbock Women’s Club; co-chair of decades’-long CEO Roundtable (a decades’-long circle of men friends who were some of the “good old boys of Lubbock” / “king makers” (governors) of Texas. Surprisingly, they took me into their long-time circle of friends & most of them through the years introduced me to their wives, families, best friends & treated me like a Lubbock native. How generous of them & what an unexpected compliment to me. Continuing into 2022, The Roundtable donates generously to annual & endowed scholarships ($300K+ ever-compounding value) for TX Tech Univ. Honors College & all-university top scholars. A hug “Thank you” to Lubbock new-comer Marie Evans for having taken over the care-&-feeding of The Roundtable … nowadays probably a 60+ year volunteer circle of friends.

Year-by-year highlights

my mother coordinated a huge birthday part for my #3 year: including neighbor kids Carol Sue Dewey, Peggy Brehm & dozens more — but not the Sheridan boys Mike & Pat across the street — because they hadn’t invited me to their b-day party, & my mother recalled that I had to watch from afar while kids played in their front yard. A decade or so later, Pat Sheridan & his thuggy boy friends, stole my beloved pet rabbit on Hallowe’en night & threw it to its death down a neighbor’s chimney. How sad for all concerned.

Born June 30, 1946: right in the middle of the year: I liked that symmetry! a Baby Boomer: continuously surrounded by kids my age: I loved it. At 2 year-old, I climbed a tall ladder to join my adored father & roof-repair team working to plug rain leaks atop our brown-brick home at 428 S. Estelle. Three-year-old Carl Dee Williams had reported my ascent to my mother, who quickly & silently recruited a roof-repair man to grab me & return me safely to the ground. I had made my climb to the edge of the roof.

1950-1954: Kindergarten through 4th grade at Sunnyside Elementary School on Kellogg St. / US Hwy. 54 in Wichita, KS. Teachers: Kindergarten: Mrs. Halderman; 1st grade: Ms. Walerious / Ms. Cruz; 2nd grade: Mrs. Klepinger / Miss McGinley; 3rd grade: Mrs. Edgington (Miss Scott, also, a 3rd-grade teacher was our art teacher & taught us how to draw with perspective: fascinating); I was assigned to sit with Robert Linsted during math because we were both good at math: I heard he became a professor of Civil Engineering at Wichita State Univ.), 4th grade: Miss Hackett: she flunked me in English for an entire quarter (I’m not sure why, but I was terrified of school thereafter. When my mother called to inquire how she could help me with English, the teacher replied that the grade was only to “clip my wings” Clip my wings?! I was barely coping with my parents’ divorce & my mother & husband #3 moving in with my father & me). Side note about Baby Boomer years: during kindergarten & 1st grade some of us Baby Boomers got shuttled off to a newly built school & the some of rest of us got put into the next-grade-higher class with older kids. Throughout grade school, I was home sick approximately a month out of each school year: measles, chicken pox, tonsilitis … but I never felt as though I missed much because school moved so slowly. I’d talked my father into teaching me to read before I ever went to school.

1955-56: Alice Birney Elementary School in San Diego, CA: Mr. Graves, class president 2x, elected to take classmates’ savings (via a Bank of America school-outreach promotion) to the school office; a leader of the school’s winning-est The Mad Hatters girls’ intramural sports team. My down-the-street piano teacher Mrs. Elizabeth Dale paid me a quarter if I would practice the piano 30 min. a day. I was delighted. My mother was mortified. My piano teacher was married to the Rev. Charles Dale, minister of the Missionary Alliance Church that my mother, step-father & I attended, so I played the piano for Sunday School & Bible School classes. I won a free trip to the brand new Disneyland by having taken the most kids to my Sunday School classes. My mother & step-father were chaperones on that fun, church-bus trip from San Diego to Anaheim & back on a sunny Saturday. Throughout 5th grade in San Diego, I took my step-father’s last name: “Gabbert.” My step-father was a belligerent alcoholic, so eventually my mother & I (& a few months later: my step father <sigh>) moved back in with my father in Wichita.

1956-57: from San Diego back to Wichita: 6th grade teacher Mrs. Mrs. Lansdown, she didn’t seem to like us. There were two other 6th-grade classes: one was an advanced-placement class with Miss Scott. I was relieved to have been in CA when students were chosen for that class because those kids worked twice as hard as the rest of us. FUN! St. James Episcopal Church sponsored Friday-night Co-Ed sock hops for soon-to-be-7th graders & junior high kids. We Sunnysiders eventually got invited, & I was ready. I’d taken a year of ballroom dancing & had faithfully watched “Dick Clark’s American Bandstand” ABC-TV week-daily sock hop: if memory serves… 1.5 yr. hours in San Diego, only 30 min. on TV in Wichita — nevertheless, I was ready. My boyfriend John Lambert, who carried a switchblade, was a good rock-&-roller, so we had a great time every Fri. night at Co-Ed. He got me elected Sec. of the group: no responsibilities — just a title & a photo in the local Wichita Eagle newspaper. Coincidentally, the pres. of Co-Ed at the time was 9th grader Dallas Webster, whom I later crossed paths with in Austin when he was a computer researcher at MCC, a high-tech start-up where Stan Orth, my partner-at-the-time was the budget director: small world. Dallas was stunned when I had the photo of him & me (as 9th & 7th graders, respectively, in Wichita, KS) copied & posted on his MCC office door in Austin, TX. What a hoot!

1958-1961 7th & 8th grade Roosevelt Intermediate School in Wichita in Mr. Henry Frickel‘s home room #204. Henry Frickel was everyone’s favorite teacher. He taught math. He was my home room teacher for the 2.5 yr. I was at Roosevelt. I Spent the fall semester of 9th grade back in San Diego , CA: first at Hale Jr. High & then at Woodrow Wilson Jr. High. Once again, my mother had erroneously assumed that she & my 20-yr-older sister & my mother could get along (they couldn’t) & that it would be better if my mother weren’t living with two of her husbands (it wasn’t — turns out that my step-father / husband #3 & my father / husband #2 shared WWII memories in common … in addition to my on-again / off-again mother as their spouse). Don’t try to figure it out. They never did. Plus, my mother had a very temporary boyfriend at the neighborhood bar … another story, better forgotten. I was preoccupied with the fact that my on-again/off-again boy friend John Lambert had unexpectedly found another true love, whom he didn’t drop the minute he found out that I had again, unexpectedly & unannounced moved back to Wichita. Ah, young love. The moving from KS-CA-KS & the week-long move time & given the fact that CA schools started 1 mo. later than KS schools: I had a lot of catching up academically to do … when I found myself back in Wichita(from San Diego) for 2nd semester of 9th grade. while taking 5 “solids” classes: algebra, English, Latin, laboratory sciences & physical education I was banned from any & all social activities until I caught up & was making all A’s again. An impossible task that sooner than later turned out OK.

1961-1964: 3 glorious years at Wichita, KS, East High 3,000 students, Friday night sock hops at our gym “The Hangar:” the continuous excitement that true love &/or true adventure were in the offing at any moment. My only claims to fame are that I’m the only person in my 1,000-person class who was elected Class Senator all three years. And at one of the Friday night Hangar dances, several of the African-American women (ultra-amazing rock-&-roll dancers themselves) came to my area of the gym to watch me dance. And that I quizzed out of 9 hours of English at KU — thanks to the Advanced Placement prowess of our senior-year AP English teacher, who forced me to take the exam (after I’d casually mentioned to her that I wasn’t planning to take the test). The big AP English essay topic that year was about Moby Dick — exactly what we’d been studying in class. I’d just written a paper about the symbolic significance of the names of the ships in “Moby Dick” & their Old Testament namesakes. Having quizzed out of hours at KU gave me the goal of graduating from KU in 3 years, which I did. KU was a flunk-out / party school. A lot of would-be physicians dropped out after a semester.

1964-1967: graduated in 3 years from The Univ. of KS “With Distinction,” “Honors in Russian,” Phi Beta Kappa, earned a teaching certificate; joined Chi Omega sorority, thanks to the letter-writing campaign of my beloved circle of guy friends: The Kabongas, a intramural-sports circle of friends (Bob Bury, Jim Helmick, Rod Johnston, Bob Fulks & others). Luckily for me, they informally “adopted” me as their sister & would squire me around to social events while my North High, ’62 college boyfriend Ronnie Duane Morgan was in college at OK Christian College. Spent the summer of 1965 in Barcelona, Spain: delightful romance with a gorgeous, local attorney (Aldo d’Ambrosio Gomariz) whose younger, gorgeous sister was assigned to take me shopping; summer of 1966 in Munich, Germany with Oklahoma University’s Russian Language Institute. What I had hoped would be a goof-off summer with a handful of Okies learning Russian was a bunch of graduate school-level students from Ivy League universities: oh, my. Much to my surprise & dismay, college was far more time-consuming & academically demanding than I had assumed. I think I earned 9 hr. of Russian toward my double major of Russian & Spanish. During my OU Russian-language summer school, we classmates also visited East Berlin, Poland, Czechoslovakia, the USSR, Ukraine. While based in Munich, I made a visit to the Dachau Concentration Camp site of WWII — that my father & step-father had helped liberate during their respective WWII duties (my father: a Captain of Engineers; my step-father, a Master Sgt. of artillery). A secret of my success: during my freshman year of KU, I made a deal with myself to study steadfastly on week nights & not to lift a finger about studying on the week-ends: the personal agreement paid off: at KU & later at UT Austin while I was earning my PhD degree: 1987-1991. The week-ends were MINE!! In Austin, I treated myself to a Grey Line tour for every semester I successfully stayed enrolled (all but one: I dropped out of UT Austin after 1 mo. of my first semester … when I lost my car in the parking garage! Fortunately, a watchful professor had her administrative assistant telephone me — to suggest that I contact UT Austin Graduate School to request that my full-ride graduate fellowship be put on “hold” until my return. They did. I did. I completed my PhD in 1991 while holding down a full-time fund-development job in my UT Austin College of Communication. My floor-to-ceiling windowed office over-looked the line-up area for Austinites to get into the wildly popular “Austin City Limits” music show — held in the building next to mine. For a few months, I had an office in the base of the Communication B Bld. — the Austin City Limits building — where I could see celebrities & hundreds of “fans” coming & going. Fun! During my UT Austin years, I helped WICI / Women in Communications by doing job placement for UT Austin women communication majors: into communication-related businesses of my peer WICI members.

During my Lubbock years, Turkish TTU graduate students took dozens of us TX Tech faculty & staff on all-expenses-paid, week-long trips to, in & around Turkey … to promote their mentor Gulen’s schools for youth in Turkey. What an experience — to glance across a seemingly tranquil field into the war-torn country of Syria.

back to the Fall 1967: Kansas City, MO, Public Schools: student-taught 1st, 3rd & 5th-year Russian; 1st & 2nd-year Spanish at at Senior High School through cooperating teahers Mr. Manwarren & Ms. Willella Curnutt (probably The Best Teacher in the Known Kosmos). My 5th-year Russian students were headed to Ivy League universities & places that could tain them for the US Foreign Service.

1967-1968: full-time, contract, substitute teacher in KCMO Public Schools: 1st grade, Academically Talented 6th & 7th-graders & 7th graders at Swinney Elementary School & later an over-crowded 7th-grade class whose students hadn’t ranked academically high enough for their “AT” peers down the hall; next I was assigned to Kumpf Elementary School 7th-grade class: shamefully underserved 7th-grade class in downtown KCMO (almost all, beautiful African-American students, plus one, obviously intellectually challenged white boy who got beaten up on the rare occasion he showed up for school: broken windows, never-working toilets, a permanent armed guard patrolling hallways; dangerous play ground; BUT an elegant, conscientious pres. of PTA made a personal visit & plea to me to stay with the class for the duration of the school year: I was their 24th substitute teacher by the time I arrived in about April. I stayed. What a dismal experience & probable future for those beautiful, deserving students.

1969-72 As sec.-treas. of The Breitenbach (my married name) Family Reunion, I got a 3-year job teaching at Ingalls Independent School district: upper grade school through high school in Ingalls, KS — approx. 34 mi. west on US Hwy. 56 from Dodge City. I also taught 1st through 3rd-year Russian, 1st & 2nd-year Spanish, speech, physical education x2 (I can’t walk & chew gum, so my Chi Omega sorority sister Joy Miller, a PE major, helped me get myself organized): one year: girls only; one year: boys & girls: oh, my; I sponsored a senior trip to the Ozarks (where the senior boys managed to sink a boat within the 1st 30 minutes); a prom & prom banquet (the band I contracted with — from near-by Dodge City Community College … got drunk & quit an hour early, but while they were playing, they were good); a regional speech contest, judged our league’s pep club (my neighbor’s Bazine High School won even though I was the Pep Club sponsor for the sr. high & the jr. high for Ingalls Indep. School District bless Mrs. Irsik for having sewn me a pep club uniform!); class play; Parents’ Day fiesta, etc. I learned a lot from the cooks in the kitchen & the housekeepers. The teachers elected me Pres. of the Ingalls ISD Teachers Assoc. Our only official act was to withdraw from the KS Teachers association. I was nominated for KS Teacher of the Year & in later years — due to my serving as two-year Pres. of the 4,000-member KS Assoc. of University Women: was a two-year judge of the KS Teacher of the Year award through Emporia State Univ. Also, I was a Copeland, KS, High School commencement speaker & a prom banquet speaker for another western KS high school. Typical schedule; Monday nights: Dodge City Branch of the American Association of University Women (eventually I was branch / local president of our 100-member branch &then state treasurer & eventually 2-yr. president of the 64 KS AAUW branches with almost 4,000 KS members; ; Tuesdays: Ford County Historical Society meetings; Wednesdays: CCD teacher: Catholic equivalent of Sunday School: for 8th-graders & later for 2nd graders, wo were getting ready for their 1st Holy Communion (my egregious error: I unknowingly mis-advised the mother of one of my precious 2nd graders to have her daughter dress however she wanted for the communion service. WRONG on my part: all the little girls always wore frilly, all-white dresses. My precious advisee showed up wearing a magnificent, navy-blue suit with a pill-box hat to match. She looked magnificent, but she was different ly attired than the other 7-yr.-old little girls’. I hope my error didn’t scar her for life.

1972-1982: chairside dental assistant for my now late former husband Dr. Chris Breitenbach, KU (1962-65), Univ. of Missouri at Kansas City Dental School, 1965-1969). To ease the consternation of having a job that didn’t require even a high school diploma, I served as 5-yr. treasurer of the Ford County Historical Society (its Home of Stone was a top tourist attraction in Dodge City; one of Chris’ great uncles had dated the woman who had owned the historic, all-stone home in downtown Dodge City; a marriage had taken place in the old home, so as tour guide, I wore my wedding dress to add to the atmosphere. Also, I served at the FCHS’s two-year treasurer of The 1976 / Bicentennial Project: the Coronado Historical Park: a roadside stop near the site where Coronado & his troops successfully crossed the dangerous Arkansas River. The conquistadors held a mass of thanksgiving for having safely crossed the then-treacherous Arkansas River. We Ford County Historical Society friends buried an on-site time capsule so successfully that none of us remaining volunteers knows where the time capsule is! — but we had a terrific, regional, Bicentennial celebration in 1976 on the north side of US Hwy. 50 of Dodge City & the Ft. Dodge Old Folks; home. Chris donated money to the Historical Park with the proviso that the north side of the cross’ plaque quoted from an Englishman’s book … something to the effect: “the only role of the Spanish was that of conqueror. The native American Indians were friendly & helpful.” The Dodge City Women’s Chamber of Commerce selected me for their Outstanding Member of the quarter — right after I’d moved to Austin. It was gratifying to be remembered even though I had moved away — especially because I was an insecure, first-semester / drop-out PhD student at UT Austin College of Communication / Dept. of Journalism.

Because I had converted from Protestantism to Catholicism when I married in 1968, I enthusiastically taught 2nd grade & 7th grade CCD (Catholic Sunday School on Wed. evenings) classes for three years in the Hispanic / east side of Dodge City. Among others, I met & admired Margarita Amaro, ever-smiling, ever-kind-hearted. I nominated her for the Dodge City Lions Club Person of the Year. She won, & Chris & I had the pleasure of attending her standing-room-only banquet at the Silver Spur Convention Center. Her husband Vic Amaro was the long-time Dodge City Chief of Police. Also, in later years at the Silver spur Hotel & Conf. Room, I served as Mistress of Ceremonies for the 200+ person Kansas Honors Society banquet for 5-county high school seniors in the top 10% of their respective classes. Dignitaries from “my” University of KS came to Dodge City to honor western Kansas kids — including some of my former students from Ingalls. Suddenly my sullen, ungrateful attitude about KU (too difficult, demanded too much time) turned around. I ran for & won-by-a-land slide a 5-yr. term on the highly competitive KS Univ. Alumni Assoc. Bd. Chris had been my campaign manager & talked me into getting KU’s alumni mailing list & mailing postcards to everyone on the list. My postcards had my photo & “Vote for Me!” call to action. After my land-slide victory, the KU Alumni Assoc. never again released the mailing labels of their members to board candidates. Chris loved KU so much that he gladly drove me (3 or 4 times per year) x 5 years from Dodge City to Lawrence & back (from SW KS to NE KS). I was a bit intimidated by fellow board members: a former governor, oil barons, etc. But then they might have noticed my land-slide “win” from SW KS! When regularly returning to KU, I had the delightful opportunity to introduce some of my former Kansas City, MO students to my former Ingalls, KS students: small world! all KU Jayhawks.

During his dental-school years & my school-teaching & dental-office years, Chris & I steadfastly purchased farmland in Cheyenne County, CO — mostly at about $50 / acre: cheap, cheap, cheap because it was drydrydry. Eventually we had amassed approximately 10,000 acres & oil-&-gas companies were coming in to “thump” @$40/acre our land. Despite being the the ’30s era Dust Bowl area, rains came, dry-land wheat crops flourished; Cheyenne County farmers rented our land for their cattle to graze … money was pouring in. We brought land in Ford County, Hodgeman County … in the Garden City & Topeka areas, too. The older of my two older brothers & his wife went into a farming partnership with Chris & me. We all made money. Eventually Chris moved away, said he wasn’t ever coming back, so I divorced him & sold him my one-half of the thousands of acres of farmland we had purchased through the years.

Through popular off-the-shelf books about financial investing, I taught myself to invest & automatically reinvest (at no cost) in stocks & mutual funds that generally doubled about every five years. Non drama. No stress. No fees. In other words, I usually met my goal of 15% annual return, thanks to the annual report of Value Line — available at no charge in most public libraries. I became a philanthropist & to date have donated approximately $5+M to various community & university foundation & other non-profit organizations.

I owe al of my great health, good financial fortune & wonderful friends to the God of my understanding — & to my parents, wonderful friends through the decades & all of the kind-hearted people who have patiently listened to my personal story via Al-Anon, Over-eaters Anonymous & Adult Children of Alcoholics meetings in Austin, Lubbock & Fredericksburg. I’ve sponsored dozens of people & have been humbled & inspired by their stories.

Thank YOU for having read my meanderings. Thank you for being my friend. I wish you every success, prosperity & life eternal.
