The City of Fredericksburg Animal Shelter has commonly been known as the City Pound, WELL THOSE DAYS ARE OVER! We now have a New Name, (City of Fredericksburg Animal Shelter), a New Look & a New Attitude!

The City Of Fredericksburg Animal Shelter is run and funded by the City of Fredericksburg & is under the jurisdiction of the Fredericksburg Police Department. The functions of animal control & the shelter are to enforce the city’s animal control laws, take in lost, stray & owner-surrendered dogs & cats. We are a minimum kill shelter. Dogs & cats that are brought in as strays have to be kept for a minimum of 4 days; if unclaimed, they then become the property of the City of Fredericksburg. After the 4 days, the animals are evaluated and then put up for adoption. At this time, the cats are socialized & the dogs are started on an obedience program as time allows. Unfortunately, due to limited space, some of the dogs & cats may have to be euthanized to make room for the new ones. The dogs & cats, which are adopted, have a small adoption fee that includes spaying/neutering & a rabies shot.

Many dogs & cats are surrendered to the shelter because of their behavioral problems. Most of these problems have simple solutions & can be resolved with some owner education, basic obedience classes, being spayed or neutered & a little bit of the owner’s time.

Fredericksburg has an existing & growing problem with stray & feral cats. We are working hard to get this problem under control, but need your help as a responsible pet owner. We need the citizens of Fredericksburg to start spaying & neutering their cats & dogs to help control this over population!
