Fredericksburg lies in the very center of the Texas Hill Country, a geographic area that spans all or parts of 15 counties in central Texas & encompassing roughly 10,000 square miles. This historic town, settled by Germans in 1846, is roughly 70 miles west of Austin, the  state capital, & approximately 65 miles northwest of San Antonio, home to the legendary Alamo.  The cities of Austin, San Antonio & Fredericksburg form an almost-perfect triangle in the  heart of Texas.

Fredericksburg and Gillespie County are in the heart of the Texas Hill Country that has abundant sunshine & mild winters. Gillespie County boundaries include approximately 1,055 miles & 675,200 acres. Elevations range from 1,100 to 2,250 feet above sea level with the higher elevation bringing County residents cooler summer nights.  The County is primarily plateaus & hills covered with cedar, oak & other timber with the landscape broken by the spring-fed Pedernales River. There are 57 types of soils ranging from shallow soil to deep sand with 573,000 acres used for agriculture & 82 percent of that dedicated to rangeland.  The winters are mild with the average January maximum temperature 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The average daily August temperature is 95 degrees.  The annual average rainfall in Gillespie County is 27.44 inches with the most rainfall normally in April and May and again in June and September.  Prevailing winds are southerly with smog relatively unknown. Gillespie County receives about 62 percent of the total possible sunshine annually.

Education     … many national merit scholar winners & finalists.   Fredericksburg ISD has an extensive adult and community education programs in rural Texas which translates into wide community support for schools as well as delivering basic, technical and personal interest classes to adult learners. These programs are being expanded to include accredited college level academic, vocational and technical courses.  In addition to a college-accredited Nursing School, there are several private schools in the county offering alternative-education options.  The Hill Country University Center is an academic partnership among several schools offering several bachelors degrees as well as masters & two PhD programs. The partners include Austin Community College, Texas Tech University, Angelo State University & Concordia University.

Austin Community College offers dual credit courses & core curriculum for students seeking a college degree & LVN, RN & ADN nursing programs. Texas Tech University (TTU) at Fredericksburg, a recognized higher education teaching site, offers upper-division undergraduate courses leading to a Bachelor of General Studies, BS in Multidisciplinary Studies (Teaching) & graduate degree programs in Educational Leadership & many others. The School of Nursing at TTU Health Science Center offers online undergraduate & graduate degree programs in nursing including BSN & MSN.  Angelo State University offers Masters Degrees in Guidance & Counseling, Curriculum & Instruction & Student Development & Leadership in Higher Education.
